While going around Netherlands, I noticed some small shelves or cabinets full of books that are outside houses and along the roads. Some are made of wood, some are made of glass. Some have stuff toys, and some have puzzles. The Dutch call them minibieb or minibibliotheken.
According to my partner, these are small libraries that started sometime in 2013. This practice was copied from the USA where people put books for othe people to borrow or take for free. People who borrow can return it anytime they like. Some of those who take books replace them with some of their own. But people can always take books for free.
We stopped at one and I inspected the contents. Some books are new, some are old but still in good condition. In other areas, a bench is put beside the free library for people to sit and read. In some areas, it’s just the the little library.
This is worth replicating and it would be nice if it can be done in the Philippines.
The history of the Catholic Church is integral to the history of Christianity as a whole. It is also, according to church historian, Mark A. Noll, the “world’s oldest continuously functioning international institution.
Over time, schisms have disrupted the unity of Christianity. The Catholic Church considers that major divisions occurred in c. 144 with Marcionism, 318 with Arianism, 451 with the Oriental Orthodox, 1054 to 1449 (see East–West Schism) during which time the Orthodox Churches of the East parted ways with the Western Church over doctrinal issues (see the filioque) and papal primacy, and in 1517 with the Protestant Reformation, of which there were many divisions, resulting in over 200 denominations.
The Catholic Church has been the driving force behind some of the major events of world history including the Christianization of Western and Central Europe and Latin America, the spreading of literacy and the foundation of the universities, hospitals, the Western tradition of monasticism, the development of art and music, literature, architecture, contributions to the scientific method, just war theory and trial by jury. It has played a powerful role in global affairs, including the Reconquista, the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Investiture Controversy, the establishment of the Holy Roman Empire, and the Fall of Communism in Eastern Europe in the late 20th century.
On Easter Sunday in March 1521, Magellan arrived at Limasawa, an island west of Homonhon Island, where Magellan’s missionaries conducted the first mass on Philippine soil. Participating in the mass were two ruling brothers: Rajah Colambu, ruler of Limasawa, and Rajah Siagu, ruler of Butuan in Northern Mindanao. Both rajahs kissed the cross and prayed with the crew, making them the first Filipinos to encounter Christianity. Afterwards, Magellan and his crew decided to sail to Cebu to convert more Filipinos to Catholicism. The first recorded conversion in the Philippines took place on this island on Sunday, April 14, 1521 when the King and Queen of Cebu and their subjects embraced the Catholic faith during the Sunday mass. On that day alone, according to one account, Magellan’s priests baptized up to eight hundred Cebuanos.
Within twenty-five years of the first conversion on Cebu, about a quarter of a million Filipinos—half of the entire population of the archipelago at the time—converted to Christianity. The rapid rate of baptism was aided by books on catechism published by monastic presses, such as the “Doctrina Christiana,” (Christian Doctrine) which was published in Tagalog and Spanish in xylography type in 1593. Over time, religious works were also published in other Filipino languages, such as “Pagduao sa santisimo sacramento sa altar, cag sa mahal na Virgen” (Visit of the Sacred Sacrament in the altar of the blessed Virgin of San Alfonso Maria de Ligorio) (1886) in Hiligaynon pictured below.
Home quarantine was imposed to stop the spread of covid19. To force everybody to stay home, travel by land, sea, and air is curtailed. Unfortunately, majority of the populace, particularly in the Philippines are experiencing hunger. Being home quarantined with no food, no work, and no savings is as great a death threat as covid.
The government is doing some actions to solve this but relief goods is not sufficient, and everybody is not favored. Hunger is real especially to those from the provinces who found employment in Manila and are trapped in the city. They are not given relief goods because accordingly, they are not voters in that barangay or municipality. So relatives and other good hearted citizens are pooling resources to help them.
Amid the problems, fear, and depression brought by the pandemic covid19, let us look at the brighter side of it.
Health – Staying home is the best protection against the virus. And those infected will prevent the transmission of the same.
Beautiful view of the Siera Madre Mountain – For a long time, Manilenians did not have a clear view of the mountain due to thick smog. But because of the home quarantine, gas emission was minimized, the air is quite purified hence, the sight.
Government – The govenment is obviously caught off guard by the pandemic disease. With the lack of plans and budget, let’s hope that oue legislators will pass laws to implement and properly control future outbreaks.
Savings and insurance – Majority of Filipinos have no savings and insurance. Let’s learn from our experience today and start saving/investing for short and long term needs.
Relationships – Families and friends I got closer
Faith – Everybody prayed and encouraged others to also pray, reach out to God and strengthen their faith
Tasks that were never done before due to lact of time are now being attended to
Talents and hobbies are being discovered and cultivated.
These are just some benefits of home quarantine. But most of all, because of the minimized movement of people, Mother earth have also rested and had the chance to rejuvenate.
In the later part of the 20th century, the world became aware of global warming which scientists associated with the depletion of the ozone layer. The ozone layer, as we all know, protects the earth from the harmful effects of solar radiation. The depletion of the ozone layer has adverse effects not only to humans but also to amphibians, marine ecosystems, and plants. Some effects to humans are skin cancer, eye damage, immune system damage, and accelerated aging of skin,
Humans have invented a lot of machineries with gas emissions and abused the use of natural resources. Likewise, humans formulated a lot of chemicals that pollutes both water and air. Then wastes from the use of plastics added more damage to the environment and death to all kinds of living things. Some countries are now making moves to save the earth. But todays modern lifestyle makes it difficult to control gas emissions.
I consider the pandemic covid19 as a way of cleaning and repairing the earth. Community quarantines have forcibly minimized the movement of people all over the world. Lockdowns have limited air, land, and sea transportations. And albeit this happens only for a short span of time, it still gave Mother Earth the chance to rest, and clean the air and water with minimal disturbance.
Likewise, the quarantine should give us a chance to reflect, most especially that this is the lenten season, on our lives, and on our relationship with God, family, friends and other people
With the outbreak of the Novel Corona Virus, dubbed as the NCOVID19, people are in a panic buying mood. I went to Robinsons mall and the only available alcohol is the 60ml Ethyl alcohol. Customers are only allowed to buy two bottles. So I bought two. I went to other pharmacies, like watson, etc, but likewise, they are out of stock.
So I decided to use the available stock I have and make my own hand sanitizer. Besides, constant use of alcohol will dry the skin. Luckily, I planted aloe vera before and they are ready to use. I prefer fresh aloe vera. I took the habit of using aloe vera from the employer of my sister in Cyprus. She used aloe vera as moisturizer and as a basic remedy for all skin troubles. So wherever I live, I always have aloe vera plants. But you can use the commercial alo vera gel. Aloe vera will act as moisturizer to save the skin from drying up.
Here are the ingredients and things needed:
1 cup alcohol
2/3 cup aloe vera gel
8-10 drops peppermint essential oil
mixing bowl
spoon
funnel
plastic containers (preferably small ones so you can put one in your bag to use on the go)
Procedure:
Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. Sterilize the things you will use and properly wash the fresh aloe vera before extracting the gel. You can watch on youtube a video on how to extract aloe vera gel. Mix the alcohol and aloe vera gel in the mixing bowl using the spoon until completely smooth. Add the peppermint by drop while continuously stirring. After about 8 drops, smell the mixture to test. If you like a stronger scent, add a few more drops. When the mixture is ready, place the funnel over the mouth of the containers and fill them.
After 40 minutes, tinest ng nurse ng allergy for antibiotics.
MY GOODNESS! FROM 3AM TO 4:20PM, dextrose lng.
In a barangay of Hungduan, Ifugao, there lived a family of eight children. They lived in a house with wide stone-covered backyard. At daytime, they all do their chores. The mother teaches Religion subject at the Elementary School nearby. Their father works at a government department and only goes home on weekends. Every night before bedtime, their mother told them bible stories. After the story, they prayed together before sleeping.
One Saturday night, when the moon was full and shining brightly, the older children named Bugan, Dudduli, Nah-hiw, Aggin, and Immayya decided to play outside. They chose to play Hide and Seek. To select the first seeker, they lined themselves sisde by side twenty feet away from the wall of the house. At the count of three, they ran to the wall. The last one who reached the wall was Immayya. Immayya then faced the wall, closed her eyes and covered them with her palms. She started counting while her sisters hid themselves. At the count of twenty, she started looking for them. She easily found Bugan, Dudduli, and Aggin. But she couldn’t find Nahhiw. Five minutes passed but Nahhiw wasn’t found. The other sisters helped in searching for Nahhiw. They searched everywhere, every corner of their house and outside, but didn’t find her. Another five minutes passed, but they couldn’t find her and they started to worry. They then told their parents and their parents joined in searching for Nahhiw.
Meanwhile, Nahhiw was comfortably sitting where she was hiding. She looked up at the sky and started counting the stars. While counting, she started wondering where the moon and the stars go at daytime. She started thinking where the airplane, that sometimes passes by above, came from and where it is heading. Her parents said that it is carrying people. ‘Wow, that’s really amazing! How did they make the airplane?’ So maybe, there are beautiful places out there. She dreamt of seeing those places where there are airplanes. She promised herself that one day, when she gets older, she will be in big places. And she will ride in airplanes. One day! She continued counting the stars, continued dreaming of far-away beautiful places, oblivious to what’s happening below her, and without meaning to, she slept.
Her parents became more anxious and ordered the other children not to play outside anymore. They made kerosene torches and looked further away from the house. They even knocked on their neighbors’ houses to check if Nahhiw hid there, but she wasn’t there. The neighbors, who happen to be cousins, joined in the search but they didn’t find Nahhiw. One uncle, who is the nearest neighbor, told the other children to stay inside the house to be safe, and the adults continued the search.
Nahhiw suddenly woke up when something bit her leg. She put her finger to where the pain is and found a big ant. On reflex, she killed the ant then she became aware of her surroundings. At first, she did not know where she was and started to panic why she slept outside in a sitting position, squeezed by the leaves of a tree. She heard her name, then she heard her sisters fighting. Her sisters were still outside the house. She finally remembered that they played hide and seek. ‘Oh, my goodness’, she exclaimed silently. They must be worried about her and her parents will surely scold her. She tried to climb down but was difficult, so she jumped.
Bugan, Dudduli, Aggin, and Immayya were arguing. Bugan blamed Dudduli for suggesting to play outside. Dudduli blamed Aggin for suggesting to play hide and seek. All of a sudden, they heard a noise and saw Nahhiw at the foot of the betelnut. They thought that it was a ghost and they just stood and stared at her. When nobody spoke, Nahhiw knew that they are all angry at her, so she went inside their house, took her blanket and laid down in one corner of their room.
The other children looked for their parents and uncles and told them that Nahhiw is in the house. When the parents arrived, Nahhiw kept quiet and pretended to be asleep. She brazed herself for her parents’ scolding. She was certain that her father will whip her for all the worries and troubles she caused. Her father and mother went to see her in where she was laying down. Breathlessly, she waited for them to order her to stand up, but surprisingly, they were silent. Her mother touched her, fixed her blanket and asked her father to go to their room to sleep too. Their father told the other children to sleep as well. The other children looked at each other unbelievingly. They were sure that their parents will spank Nahhiw, but it didn’t happen.

Before every year ends, astrologers already forcasted the lucky colors for the coming year, and per zodiac sign. The question is, do colors really affect our luck, and our lives for that matter? Let’s take a look at colors.
According to some articles, the history of colors dates back more than 40,000 years ago when artists invented pigments using a combination of soil, animal fat and burned charcoal. In Christianity, a multicolored rainbow was seen after the Great Flood. According to the Bible, it is a covenant made between God and Noah. It is a symbol of God’s promise never to flood the earth again. In Mythology, the rainbow is considered as a bridge called the Bifrost that connects Midgard (earth) with Asgard, home of the gods. And so, we can deduce that colors were already part of God’s creation and that’s the basis in inventing the different colors.
In Chinese culture, colors are important, as they are endowed with lucky meanings. Red, yellow, and green are the three main colors that are considered lucky in people’s daily lives as well as on special occasions. Here are some meanings of colors that I collected from several articles.
Black
For the Chinese, black corresponds to water and is considered to be a neutral color in Chinese culture and is the color of heaven, symbolizing the northern and western sky. This color represents immortality, knowledge, stability and power.
Because of this, government cars are all black. The police uniform is also black to project authority and control.
White symbolizes innocence and purity, reflects light and is considered a summer color. It’s popular for decorating and fashion because it’s neutral. Health professionals wear white to imply sterility.
Chinese see white as a color representing metal and is associated with death and mourning. The Chinese wear white at funerals.
Red
Red is the first colored arc of the rainbow and because of this it has the longest wavelength. In Christianity this arc corresponds to Archangel Uriel which represent wisdom and energy. In modem day Buddhism and Hinduism, the red arc corresponds with the base or Muladhara Chakra which is the first chakra that connects or “grounds” a human being to the physical plane.
Red is the most emotionally intense color, stimulating heart and breathing rates. It’s said to be the color of love, and gets noticed, but red clothing might not help in negotiations or confrontations. Red cars are the most popular targets of thieves.
For Chinese, Red represents fire and is the most popular color in China. It is also the national color representing happiness, beauty, vitality, good luck, success and good fortune. Red is famously popular in relation to anything Chinese and is widely used during festivals and important events like weddings. Red Lanterns adorn businesses and residences. Double rows of red “Xi” (happiness) letters are pasted on gates and doors. People wear red during weddings, festivals and other celebratory events. Red envelopes are stuffed with money and given as gifts during Chinese New Year.
Blue
Blue is the fifth colored arc of the rainbow. This arc is associated with Archangel Michael. Archangel Michael is the leader of all the archangels and represents spirituality. Within the rainbow, the blue represents connection to water and the spirit world. Within the chakra system, the blue arc represents Vishudda, which is the throat chakra and the ability to communicate with purity.
Blue is the most popular color, and creates effects opposite those of red. Tranquil blues cause the body to release calming chemicals, so its often used in bedrooms. Some blues are cold, even depressing. Color consultants recommend wearing blue to job interviews, because it’s a symbol of loyalty. People are more productive in blue rooms.
For the Chinese, Blue is usually seen in combination with green or black. Blue can represent wood and symbolizes spring and brings a positive meaning.
Blue stands for healing, trust and long life. Shades of green/blue are used to decorate homes for longevity and harmony.
Green
Green is the fourth colored arc of the rainbow. This arc is associated with Archangel Raphael which is used for healing. Within in the rainbow, the green represents health, wealth, and love. Within the chakra system, the green arc represents Anahata which is the heart chakra where the ability to give and receive love is processed.
Green is currently the most popular color for decorating. It’s the easiest color on the eyes and can even improve vision. It’s often used in hospitals, for its relaxing effects. Brides once wore it as a symbol of fertility. Dark green is perceived as masculine, conservative, and implies wealth.
For the Chinese, Green is the color of wealth, fertility, regeneration, hope, harmony and growth. Green also represents pure and clean.
Buildings, banks and restaurants are often painted in green. Packaging for milk or produce is often in green to indicate that the product is contamination free.
Yellow
Yellow is the third colored arc of the rainbow. This arc is associated with Archangel Jophiel which represents the brilliance of wisdom and thoughts. Within the rainbow, yellow represents the brilliance of the sun. Within the chakra system, the yellow arc corresponds to the Manipura Chakra which is the seat of man’s ego and personal power similar to how the sun feeds the earth.
Yellow is eye-catching, considered optimistic, and speeds metabolism. People lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, however, and babies will cry more. Too much of it can be overpowering. Yellow is used for legal pads because it enhances concentration.
For the Chinese, Yellow — corresponding to earth — symbolizes royalty and is reserved for the emperor.
The first Emperor of China was known as the Yellow Emperor. China was often referred to as ‘Yellow Earth’, and its mother river is the Yellow River. This is the most important color from an ancient perspective.
During the Song Dynasty (960-1279), yellow glazed tiles were used to build imperial palaces. During Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1636-1911) Dynasties, emperors were dressed in yellow imperial robes. They rode in “yellow palace” carriages and traveled on “yellow paths”. Official flags were yellow.
Official seals were packaged in yellow fabric. Overlooking the Forbidden City from Beijing Jing Mountain, one can see a sea of yellow glazed tile roofs. Gilded copper urns and animals adorn many palaces. In Chinese Buddhism, yellow is associated with freedom from material needs and monks wear yellow robes.
Purple is perceived as the color of royalty, a symbol of luxury and sophistication. It’s considered feminine and romantic, but can appear artificial – it’s rare in nature.
Brown is abundant in nature. Light brown is seen as genuine, dark brown as wood- or leather-like.
Indigo
Indigo is the sixth colored arc of the rainbow. Within the rainbow, the color indigo represents a bridge between the conscious and subconscious worlds. Within the chakra system, the indigo arc is the Ajna Chakra which is represented by the third eye and the ability to see the unseen on the spiritual level.
Violet
Violet is the seventh and final colored arc of the rainbow. This arc is associated with Archangel Zadkeil which represents mercy. Within the rainbow, the color violet is a mixture of red and blue and represents the access to the imagination and Divine inspiration. Within the chakra system, the violet arc is the Sahashara chakra which is coincides with the point where human consciousness connects with the Divine or spiritual consciousness.
Pink
Pink is the most romantic, and tranquilizing. Some sports teams paint the locker rooms for opposing teams a bright pink, so their opponents lose energy.
